simultaneously playing “count” and “beat”

Last night, while I practiced my drumbeat anyhow, I’ve learnt new stuff..And that stuff is what I never could’ve done before.. I don’t know how you call this, but anyway what i did is, my left hand played the constant quarter (counting tempo like metronom) while my right hand played different beat, such as triplet, space jam beat, and etc. Playing such stuff, it was like telling your left brain to do one task, and the other one to do different else..

First 10 minutes was tough, the counting hand would play just like what right hand played, and vice versa. Really difficult to control those hands. I kept persistent and insisted, as i tried to breakout every beat, and slowing down the count. Until I finally managed to play smoothly..Yeaah, I did it..I swapped different hand to count and to play beat. Cannot play instantly, it need to be slowly, and patience, then once you had the feel, you’ll able to played it.

I won’t be too sure this would be something useful in strikeforce - some drumming ministry that I join in. However, I do believe you’ve got to be able to practice this if you played real drumset as in the band, since you’d use your left hand to hit snare, while right hand constantly hit the hihat..

Practice makes perfect!!
